ZEROS AND SCULPTURE FROM THE COLLECTION SANTARELLI March 27, 2012 - July 1, 2012 Rome, the Rome Foundation Museum, Palace Onion Edited by Andrew G. De Marchi
After the success of the great exhibition of twentieth century American art icon Georgia O'Keeffe, The Rome Foundation offers the public an unprecedented exhibition entitled Sculpture from the Collections Santarelli and Zeri dedicated to two great Italian collectors: Federico Zeri, great art critic, and Paola Santarelli, belonging to a family business. Promoted by Rome Foundation, the exhibition is organized by the Rome Foundation - Arts - Museums with Arthemisia Group, in collaboration with the Foundation and Dino Ernesta Santarelli, and will be housed in the Museo Fondazione Roma, Palazzo Cipolla, from 27 March to 1 July 2012. The exhibition Sculptures by Santarelli and Zeri Collections, edited by Andrea G. De Marchi and with the Scientific Review of Dario Del Bufalo, has mostly statues, stones and large fragments reliefs from ancient baroque era. The works are accessible to the public for the first time in this occasion, representing the interests of Federico Zeri and Paola Santarelli, who dedicated much attention to sculpture, despite the different positions and attitudes. Santarelli The Foundation, established in memory of parents Dino and Ernesta Santarelli, has granted loan works from the vast collection of core foundational and later additions. They show an intelligent strategic line aimed at an artistic production until a few years ago rather underestimated. The considerable amount of pieces ranging from archeological up to 700, with a particular interest turned to marble and colorful history of Rome. Priceless historical, artistic and philological works are from the legacy of the great Federico Zeri (Rome, August 12, 1921 - Mentone, October 5, 1998), that accumulated during the critical his life, never have ample funds - as he himself told - but following curiosity and the quality, always assisted by an outstanding technical expertise and a very familiar in the art trade. The occasion also allows interesting considerations on the figure of what was probably the most distinguished scholar of figurative art in the mid- Twentieth century in here.
THE EXHIBITION The event brings together pieces of stone trying to tell aspects of style, subject and materials sculpture, through a selection made in the two collections. The exposure highlights similarities and differences they express, allowing some mention of the various approaches collector to the work to be acquired. Was selected to illustrate a nucleus of more than 90 outstanding works including statues, artifacts archaeological and portraits from both private collections and major museums, such as the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici, the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, and Museums Vatican. To introduce visitors to the warm intimacy of the show are masterpieces such as the Head and veiled head of a satyr, both belonging to the Roman sphere of the first Century AD Which the ancient masterpieces Ulpia Felicitas, female bust of the late Republican Age, and the Ceres II-III century AD, from the Collection Santarelli, interact with the sculptures of Allegory Virtue triumphant over Vice and Andromeda bound to the rock (XVI-XVII c.) By Pietro Bernini, both belonging to the collection and Zeri from Carrara Academy of Bergamo. The artistic richness of the two collections is even documented by the bust of Pope Paul V Borghese (XVIth century). Nicolas Cordier and the Bust of Cardinal Marzio Ginetti (1673) and marble porphyry of Alexander Swift. They are also exposed many of the reliefs that Bernini tradition handed down from the real features of their clients, illustrating one of the great achievements of Western figurative: the portrait. An absolute novelty is the illumination of some pieces, dynamic, from different points. You can thus better appreciate the quality of materials and sculptural techniques of surfaces and volumes in game.
THE COURSE IN THREE SECTIONS FIRST SECTION Statuary and more fragments The section brings together pieces of sculpture and fragments from more substantial measures. Ordered with a simple chronological order, constitute a systematic set of pieces that span a wide period of time, from the first centuries BC until the age neoclassical. To illustrate this period are exhibited works like the beautiful bust of Dionysus, marble, porphyry and alabaster I-II century AD, with remakes of the '500, from the Foundation Santarelli, and the aforementioned Andromeda tied to the rock of Peter Bernini. SECOND SECTION small carvings and samples of marbles Here are collected artifacts carved from small size, like the sweet boy's head scope of the '500 florentine, combined with colored marble and stone tiles. THIRD SECTION Portraits The last section is devoted to portraits, genre, notoriously difficult to attribution, since artists, having to approach the real likeness of the subject, tend to have reduced the expression of their style. This does not prevent the succession of artistic periods is clearly visible through the works outlined in this section. The stylistic perfection of Roman statuary of the third century is remarkable in Bust of Alexander the Great. The rediscovered classic of the thirteenth century is exemplary in the bust Frederick II, while the refinement of the Bust of Cardinal Marzio Ginetti (1673) performed by Alexander Swift, testifies to the high technical and stylistic reached by the artists of the time. Finally, it is set along the path shows the study of the sculptor, is reconstructed a sculptor's workshop, equipped with various tools and working materials, to provide the visitor a concrete idea of playing techniques. Inside the room were placed the two works famous Roman forgers of the first half of the twentieth century: Gildo Pedrazzoni Dossena and Alcaeus.
